All about Discus Fish

The discus fish is a type of cichlid fish native to South America. In particular to the waters of the Amazon River. There are three species of these beautiful tropical fish. The common discus (known as Symphysodon aqueifasciatius), the Heckle discus (Sympysodon discus), and the newest species, known as the Symphysodon tarzoo. There is a disagreement among scientists about which species type belongs to which scientific name. But, in the end, the discus fish family belongs to three species.

How is the behavior of the discus fish?

Discus fish is very social. He is not aggressive or nervous. But it will not be able to live with tiny fish that could be eaten.

If you want to introduce another member of this species, one tip is to change the elements of the aquarium. This will give the new one a bit of an advantage to adapt to the school in a "different for everyone" environment.

Among them, they are organized by hierarchy, so there may be moments of struggle to establish their position among others.

Aquarium and maintenance

Discus fish aquarium

A large aquarium is recommended since discus fish are around 15 to 20 centimeters. It must also be borne in mind that they are shoaling fish, so they will have to live with more specimens of the same species.

As with any fish, it is essential to have a good filtration system, adequate light, conditioned water, and even natural plants, trunks, and free spaces for races. Create the best possible habitat for these aquarium kings.

  • A temperature between 25 ° C and 30 ° C maximum is recommended.
  • Acidic waters with a pH between 5.5 and 6.5.

They are very demanding with the quality of the water, but it is worth watching them swim and hallucinate with their colors.

Discus fish feeding

One of the main keys to caring for discus fish is feeding. They must have a combined diet of live foods, such as mosquito larvae or brine shrimp, with scales and some vegetables. A homemade porridge composed of chicken liver and heart, egg, banana, carrots, etc., can also be used as food.

They must be fed twice a day and always in small portions since these fish are more likely to die from overfeeding than from hunger. It must be guaranteed that the diet is high in protein and vitamins for proper growth and healthy condition.
