How To Determine The Sex of Discus Fish

One of the biggest question of the discus breeder "how can I tell if my fish?" There are very few easy identifiable identifiers in this process. Here we are the methods used by some of the best breeders.

In juveniles, the determination, sex almost impossible. It is only when they begin to mate, that the possibility arises for the determination of sex aid. Juveniles, have both male and female, a rounded backfin, and it is not until they become mature that a difference can begin to be identified. Since we never over-wise process, the fish, a careful observation to support the farmers.

Allnut businesses in King Discus Hatchery, for example, it is a simple process to determine who is who, as we have observed these fish for a while, can we determine the sex of the couples themselves. This would be in each hatchery true. But for the novice or casual observer, this wouldnot be easy to do.

Some of the identifiers: The male will have thicker lips, protecting him in his fight for a woman's aid, and is more aggressive. He will be larger than the female, his forehead is thicker, and we've found that if the disc a little shy, the male is a tendency among the female and observers stay.

The dorsal fin of the male will be pointed out, and the female dorsal fin is rounded. Note that in young discus, thisnot be identified.

The breeding tube of the female, between the anus and anal fin, is broader and rounder than those of men, and will have a blunt tip. The male, in turn, has a small, sharper breeding tube. Be aware that this is clearly only during the spawning period is, and should be closely monitored.

It has been said that the male discus fish tend to have a less intense color and pattern, while women tend to be more colorful, but with a smaller pattern. I do not agree, because too many variables are out of place here, as the health of the discus, the water parameters and feeding pattern.

In an interesting article by Jeff Richard, he discusses an article from Diskus Brief, a German publication, which determine a very successful way sex of a discus with simple geometry reports. Jeff reports, and I quote: "Imagine a discussion over on the left side ... you would look at the page. Find the dorsal (top) and anal (bottom)Fins and see fin where the fins slope down (to the caudal tail) ... Make sure you are looking at the fins after they have bent over his tail back. The dorsal and anal fins are (almost equal) after the fins curve down (or up) toward the caudal fin ... Extend an imaginary line along the straight section of the 2 fins back to the tail just touches the Dorsal and anal fins past the tail fin. These two imaginary lines should intersect behind the fish. The key toSexing the fish is to cross where the lines of the tail fin. If it by the tail fin, the fish is probably a female. If they miss or just touch the tail, then it is probably a male. "Thank you, Jeff!

Sexing Discus is difficult at best. The easiest way to do this is to increase a group of six to eight discus, and allow them to mate, if you are ready. It is a beautiful sight to see this happen, and makes the hobby wellworthwhile.
